There aren't too many garden
nurseries in the Thatcham and Newbury areas, but
there's been a garden nursery here at Lower
Henwick Farm in Thatcham for over 12 years. Over
these years it's had several different names
including Thatcham Garden Nursery and Turnpike
Nursery to name but a few. Now, having recently
taken it over, Dylan and his team are starting
to transform this small nursery and hope to
bring the public an alternative source of
locally grown plants and flowers.
The nursery is situated in
the grounds of Lower Henwick Farm, an old
Georgian Farm and near to
The Taste of England
Pub, Flutterbuy Crafts and Threshers Barn.

Many people ask "What's the
difference between a garden centre and a garden
nursery?" Well the dictionary states that a
'nursery' is 'a place where plants are reared
for sale'. Most 'Garden Centres' will buy in
their plants but will sell other gardening items
such as tools, patio furniture, bird food etc.
Down2Earth plans to cross over into 'Garden Centre'
territory by selling fertiliser, compost, garden
water features, bamboo, heather & reed fencing
and some ornate garden furniture.
Down2Earth has a simple
philosophy about gardens, they should be
treated as extra rooms to your house. Your fruit
& vegetable patch is a 'larder' full of food. A
quality patio with tables and chairs is your
outside 'dining room' and the garden itself is
your natural 'living room' a place where you can
sit, relax and unwind.
Besides the plants, and
vegetables required to make these 'additional
rooms', Down2Earth has an in-house stone mason
who can create bespoke water features or garden
ornaments. They have carpenters that create
wooden ornaments and plant furniture, they even
offer a garden landscaping service to help you
transform your garden to a thing of beauty.
So as you can
see, things have definitely changed since the
old days of "Turnpike Nurseries". But this is
only the start of it. Thatcham can now start to
boast about a quality garden nursery that will
deliver good quality products, grown locally for
local people, or of course anyone else who wants
to buy them.
So why not take a trip along and see
for yourself the changes made and the changes to
come, and keep popping back to this site for
progress updates.
